Today is the last day of term and even though our school is online, we have still decided to end it on a positive note. This week we did some inquiry explaining our team 5 theme which is Te Whare Tapa Wha. Click the pictures on the side in order to see the slides the right way.
I am a Year 8 learner in Room 4 at Pt England School in Auckland, NZ. My teacher is Mrs Stone.

Ratio Practice
Today we did some math question in order to practice ratios. Most of the questions we have done today I am pretty familiar with but it was fun to recap, some of the stuff I've done last year. I can't wait to do more in ratio later in the week.

Skeleton and Bones (Science @ Tech)
This week in tech we learnt about, bones and skeletons. Not the dinosaurs, the bones in our own bodies. We looked at the smallest bone the biggest bones and what happens over time. We also did this fun work shop thing where looked at a fold up book about bones, a life size plastic skeleton and animal bones.
Sharing Information (East German Childhood)
This week we read a book about something that took place, a few years ago. It was about the Berlin wall why it was put up and how the public reacted and when it was taken down. I liked this book and even more how it wasn't written like a history book but instead someone who experienced it.
For this task we had to use key information form the text. We then had to share the key information and make connections by making an information web. We also had to make a comic strip, in order to summarize what the main events in the story were.

Multiplication Magic
This week in math, we learnt about doing Multiplication. But instead of just one digit we looked at larger numbers, and tried to multiply that. I learnt that one a quick and easy way to multiply big numbers it the array method. The array method is the same as doing place value but it's drawn out more efficiently.

Improving Sentences
This week we focused on improving the way our sentences start and end, we also looked at the length. This wasn't my favourite task especially since sentences are something I've looked at since being a year 3. However I do know that some people enjoyed this task.
Pandemonium Pandemic
Lately, you must've heard about the Corona-Virus. Well we learnt about what it is and how the different countries have handled this pandemic. I found it very interesting, especially since New Zealand has the strictest policies. By making all the travelers get quarantined for 14 days. This week we were practing making good sentences.

Saving Energy
For the past few week we have been learning about saving energy, at tech. We learnt about circuit and how it goes into a circle. I think the thing that interest me most is the different types of light bulb and how the different ones use different amount of energy. I had fun especially when we tried the experiment, my group didn't finish but the team that did looked really cool, and it's glad to see it actually works.
Staying In Balance
For this task we had to talk about how we keep ourselves balanced. There were 4 main categories we had to share, Physically, Spiritually, Mentally and Socially. This relates to team 5's term wide focus which is based on Te Whare Tapa Wha, the house of wellness. Enjoy!
Kahoot! (Extension)
This term in Extension we have been learning about the continents. We each picked a country, and looked at the people and different ethnic groups that live there. Culture, traditions, art, language and how they are different from our culture.
The country I have been researching is China. It's a very culture place, that faces many problems from the twenty-first century. However one of the most recent pandemic, COVID 19 (Corona virus) has caused quite a commotion. The illness started in China and has now spread across the world so, STAY SAFE!
Getting back to the point, to test our knowledge in a fun, yet competitive way. Today in Extension we played kahoot, and for the first time I won. Every week, we share one fact from the country we were researching. Amira helped me with a few questions, and I did have to guess a few. But surprisingly I won the quiz on the topic geography. I think that hardest question was how many countries are the continent Africa, which is 54.

Multiplication Magic 3
This week we are learning about multiplication and different ways to do this. In the last post I shared how we can do this with somewhat bigger numbers. This time I learnt about how the number have connections and you can change the equation to make it easier yet still get the same answer.
Multiplication Magic
This week we learnt about multiplication. So far we had to work on some of these questions. Maybe later in this week we are going to start learning how to multiply by algorithms so I'm looking forwards to that. Multiplication is something that I know quite well but I'm looking forward to learning how to do this in different ways. I also want to learn easier ways to multiply big numbers.
No Racism
Chinese New Zealanders
This week we learnt the story behind Chinese New Zealanders, and how they left their own countries in hope for better opportunities and a hope for a better future for their families. But instead had to deal with discrimination and racism from the people their. At some-point the government in NZ put a law up against them from entering the country hoping their numbers would decrease. We learnt about how they continued to work hard and how racism has become less problematic but is still subtle.

Earth-Worms ~Science-Tech~

This week in tech, we learnt about earth-worms. How they eat, where they live and how they breed. I found it interesting to find out that worms don't have genders, and each worm carries female and male organs. I also enjoyed learning how worms are apart of photosynthesis, and helping to vitalize the soil.
~Te Whare Tapa Wha~
This term we have been learning about Te Whare Tapa Wha (The house of wellness). Taha Tinana, Taha Wairua, Taha Hinengaro and Taha Whanau are the four walls that make the Whare. It's about keeping ourselves well Physically, Spiritually, Mentally and Socially.
Serious Subtraction
This week we learnt about subtractions and different. We then worked with Mrs Stone, and learnt more about algorithms and add don't subtract. I enjoyed this week, but I'm ready to try and challenge myself. The tasks this week have been fun, I can't wait to expand more on my learning.
Mini Statistical Inquiry
Today we did a statistical inquiry. We had to come up with a question then create a survey for the people in our class to fill out. Our topic was Common fears in room 11, we named all the types of fears and asked people to pick the ones they have. After that we counted up all of the phobias and turned the most common one into a graph. It was trypophobia fear of holes.
