This week, we learnt about the Biosphere, in extension. We looked at ecosystems, climates, animals and how this all works. We also looked at how the biosphere is made up of parts from all the other sphere such as the Atmosphere, Geosphere and Hydrosphere. We are continuing to learn discuss and research in depth what all of these are. I'm pretty happy with this task, in which we had to answer some questions and research a couple different biomes. Enjoy!
I am a Year 8 learner in Room 4 at Pt England School in Auckland, NZ. My teacher is Mrs Stone.

Kahoot! (Extension)
This term in Extension we have been learning about the continents. We each picked a country, and looked at the people and different ethnic groups that live there. Culture, traditions, art, language and how they are different from our culture.
The country I have been researching is China. It's a very culture place, that faces many problems from the twenty-first century. However one of the most recent pandemic, COVID 19 (Corona virus) has caused quite a commotion. The illness started in China and has now spread across the world so, STAY SAFE!
Getting back to the point, to test our knowledge in a fun, yet competitive way. Today in Extension we played kahoot, and for the first time I won. Every week, we share one fact from the country we were researching. Amira helped me with a few questions, and I did have to guess a few. But surprisingly I won the quiz on the topic geography. I think that hardest question was how many countries are the continent Africa, which is 54.

Term 4 Reflection (Extension)
This term in extension we are learnt about UV light, and a man called ray even came in to work with us. We made UV sensors and learnt about the ozone layer and some of the effects of climate change. This didn't relate to our school-wide theme for the term but we still learnt heaps.
We did however visit K.P.M.G in week 3. At K.P.M.G we learnt all about drama. We rewrote Romeo & Juliet in 5 sentences, we put on a play, and did heaps more. As always we all had a lot of fun and it was very educational. I can't wait to visit them again next year, to learn about more.
We made UV Sensor in extension this was all possible because of ray. UV Sensors detect how powerful the uv rays from the sun are. This allow us to be sun smart, and take precautions. Especially for people in place like New Zealand. Where there is no Ozone layer. With the help of Mr Ray, we have successfully made the sensors that detect the ultra-violet rays from the sun. We even took some UV readings.
I think I did well this term, but I definetly have done better. I did however work very hard in term 1 and 2 and got some good marks then too. I did however learn a lot, even though half the stuff we did, I had already done in robotics. I did however have much more fun learning about UV sensors and lights in extension. In future I would like to, maybe make have a D.L.O but this term has been pretty busy with prize giving and picnic and all these trips.
I enjoyed this term and can't wait to come back in 2020!

K.P.M.G
Today we had our 4th K.P.M.G Trip. As always it was to support this terms inquiry topic "Life's A Stage". We did some fun and activities and as always learnt heaps. Read on to find out more!
When we arrived at K.P.M.G it was around 10 in the morning. We then had to wait for a whilst the staff got ready. It wasn't to long of a wait and we entertained eachother in the meantime. After a couple of minutes we were greated by Justine, someone we meet everytime we visit K.P.M.G and she led us to the room we will be spending our time in. When we entered we were greated by a couple of staff members, and morning tea. There was chocolates muffins, brownies and fruit, it was all very delicous.
After grabbing a quick bite we were greeted by someone from a copany called Pop Up Globe. She, told us about William Shakespear someone you may have heard of before. The woman told us about what, when, where and why her company does what it does. We learnt that Pop Up Globe was a company that recreated shakespear plays in a recreation of a theatre shakespear made, and destroyed.
We focused on one of shakespears well known plays "Romeo and Juiliet". It was forbidden love between 2 star crossed lovers, whose death brought their families together. We had to summarise the whole story in 5 sentences and then again but each line had to have 10 syllables. This is exactly how william shakespear wrote his stories. After we all presented our groups work we played some games.
After those activites we went to lunch, and let me tell you it was delicous to. I mean common who doesn't like pizza, and salads. It was healthy but also had some yummy additions. I'm pretty sure you can tell the food that ran out first. During lunch we sat down and socialised in friendly chats and games. Time went by pretty quickly because soon after it was time for our next activity.
After lunch, were asked to stand in a line from tallest to shortest. I didn't love this part because I am one of the shortest people in extension, 5th shortest to be exact. Anways so we were put into order from tallest to shortest and then given a number between 1 and 5 we started from the tallest side. I was given the number 1. Thus meaning I was in group 1. Along with me in the group there was Bethan, Paikea, Alison and Justice the tallest person in extension. Yes I was the shortest person in my group too!
Our job was to put together a short play which was close to 3 minutes long. It didn't have to be exact, we decide to mash up 3 well known stories the title was, "Captain Drac Sparrow and the Three little Pigs". We rehearsed this and made back drops, we even had sound affects and a good ending. When is was time to present we were ready.
There were 2 groups before us and both of them were pretty good, when it came to our turn our group was quite prepared and non of us looked nervous. I was only worried about the amount of practice our groups did. When it started a few changes were made but we rolled with it and didn't think to much about it. The plot was good and there we some funny and dramatic moments. I accidently made a dramatic moment when I caught the hat Justice through in mid air, but it was only a reflex cause it was going to hit somebody so. Shhhh!
Once each group had performed we played some charades, whilst the judges confirmed the placements. Most of the answers we related to drama or our plays. But some of them were just random movies we have seen recently or are in theatres now. Pirates of the carribean was one of the most easiet ones possible. A lot of the plays were related to pirates of the carribean so it was very obvious!
After all the placements were finalised judges finally let us know our places. In each group there was the best actor, in our group it was Justice who played Captain Drax Sparrow. The winning group overall was Grama Measles. The award for the best actor overall went to Amelia and I agreed she put on and amazing show and had something for everyone!
Soon after we packed up and it was time to head back to school. I enjoyed this trip as much as I did every other time we visited and, K.P.M.G has helped us a lot throught the year in many other school wide events. THANK YOU K.P.M.G, we had a great time!

K.P.M.G
Today we had our trip too K.P.M.G. As always we had loads of fun and learnt heaps! This time it was based on things we are covering this term. You might know that our theme is Something In The Water.
When we arrived we were greeted by Justine and some staff members. We were told to take a seat and one by one they all introduced themselves and what they did. However they also told us some bad but good news. Justine told us that Nate the chef has left, he got a better job offer. Good news for him but bad for us.
The next thing that happened was we were introduced to two women. Their names were Lucy and Susy, they told us that they work were ecologist. They looked at the environment and it's inhabitants. They also looked at saving the aquatic life. They have done heaps to help the environment in many other ways too. The last thing they did was tell us about how we can help aquatic life.
Then we had morning tea. It was amazing and delicious. We were all very thankful. We are alway treated to delicious meals whenever we take a trip to K.P.M.G. We ate and happily chatted away. Very soon after most of us had finished eating. We were told to line up.
This was because we were about to work to the Sustainable coastlines shack, for a presentation. It was about a ten minute walk and we all enjoyed getting some fresh air too. When we arrived their was a women standing their. She greeted us and told us to take a seat and get comfy. She then told us where the toilets and that kind of information.
Then she started her presentation, she started by asking us what we have been learning in school about what ways and stuff. I guess she was told what our theme for the term was too. She talked about all these waterways and it's inhabitants, how they can be ruined and how to save them. She also talked about what Sustainable Coastlines do for the enviroment and they study and find ways to help the enviroment. I was very interested in the information she was sharing and really enjoyed listening to her.

When her prensentation finished we were allowed to explore. Before the presentation had started she told us that the shack and everything in it was made out of recycled material. So when we explored it wasn't just the information on the wall too read. Me and Jedida looked at the posters and the art made from bottle caps and things you might find on the beach. However in this process we found a seat with sometype of animal skin on it, I felt it and stood their thinking is this real. Me and Jedida decided not to answer that question as it may make us sick to know.
After our adventure we walked outside where there was a gift shop and a broken kind of working piano. Their was also a beautiful view of the sun, I stood there and admired it before I second. Then I was snapped back to reality and pulled in to a photo. I stood their as all these adult took pictures and before I knew it we were done.
We lined up and started walking back. Me and Jedida were buddies so we chatted the whole way back, of course their was an adult to lead us back. Her name was Holly she was one of the staff members from K.P.M.G and we had some very interesting conversations. Mostly about food, what we love about food and what we don't like so much. We all agreed that we didn't like fish, and joked about how we wouldn't be caught over fishing in the sea.
Before we knew we were back in K.P.M.G, we sat down and waited for our next task. We were then split into 5 groups. I wasn't in the same group as Jedida but I still had Tha-zin in my group. We sat around tall table and were givin a large A3 peice of paper. It had some info and instructions. Our task was to find out about the God Tane Mahuta and what his domain was. Then we had to find out how soft plastic affected the Tane Mahuta's Domain. In this case it was how did soft plastic affect the forest and it's inhabitants. We wrote a couple of things down and discussed on what we thought and why we thought that way.
Before we knew it, lunchtime had rolled by. The room was filled with a delicous aroma, like last time their was a variety of foods some that I have never seen before. At this point I decided to try something new and eat a salad with these weird ingredients in it. It did taste nice and I did enjoy it. I have always loved the salads from K.P.M.G there always filled with lovely nutirous things. There weren't many tables so I sat with a King and was soon seated with a bunch of boys but I didn't mind. We talked about Marvel, End Game and the best way to torcher someone. Not saying that I would actually do it!
When we had all finsihed we returned to our table. Our next task was to construct a robot with a bunch of craft supplies, luckily it didn't have to work. So we designed a robot to collect all soft plastic and other rubbish and construct it into works of art. As a example Me, Makayla, Tha-zin and Eden worked on a tree sculpture made from Plastic bottles, straws and other craft supplies. It look really good and I was really proud of it, we left it at K.P.M.G as a memory of this trip.

When we had finished presenting I was asked to say a thank you to K.P.M.G, Justine, Sustainable Coastlines and Miro. Those are the people that helped and planned the day for us. We said our personal thank you and goodbyes and headed back to the bus stop. It wasn't far and I recognised it from this morning. Before boarding I looked up at the building and whispered a soft that you for this wonderful day. It truly was amazing and I had heaps of fun learnt lots and can't wait to learn more.

Pointing in the Right Direction
What and experience we just had! Today the year 7 and 8 extension had a crash course on compasses with Mr Jacobsen. I for one learnt heaps probably I didn't get it right and I ended up lost! Here is our Extension Experience.
Mr Jacobsen arrived into the creative space where the extension classes are held. He walked in and we immediately sat on the mat, where he was setting up a presentation. The tightly read (Pointing in the Right Direction), this confused me and so I sat down in confusion and curiosity. When we were all seated Mr Jacobsen changed the slide and started to explain. It was pictures of compasses he told us about compasses that were different and that they did the same thing.
Then he changed the slides and we saw an arrow pointing to what was called the base plate and direction arrow. Mr Jacobsen explained that all compasses have it and that it may look different on other compasses. The direction arrow it the arrow pointing us towards our destination and what we should.\
When Mr Jacobsen finished his presentation we headed for the field to find our starting point. Me and Amira worked together, as well all know too heads are better than one. Anyways our starting point was in front of the girls toilets. We ran their and decided on what we had to do, we wrote down the letter and entered the co-ordinates and headed to the next point.
Me and Amira were going quite well and even though we weren't completely accurate. So we decided to go to the next one we did quite well and were going pretty quickly. Me and Amira talked all the way and we very very giggly. I for one was really excited and couldn't wait till the end what will happen with we do the pink one are we doing it right, their is no way to really tell.
The last stop me and Amira made was the point next too room 28. We got their and the point was pointing right towards the girls toilet so we decided to head back to the middle of the field. We handed our paper to Mr Jacobsen and waited for a reaction or some kind of instruction. When the paper got handed back to us I was actually quite suprised and also didn't know what I had done wrong.
We set off from the begging and with some help from Ms Flavell we kept going we got to the second point but we still got it wrong and we ran out of time. However with some decoding and unscrambling we did find out the worlds and we also learnt how to use a compass. it was really useful and Ms Flavell also said (She isn't going into the Forest with me and Amira) it was really funny!'
Overall I think that this was a fun experience and was really helpful. found out that it was much harder to navigate and we should always take our time. I also learnt that me and Amira don't make a good team when it come to navigating but talking on the other hand. I really like this activity and would love to do more things like this!
